Happy cubs in the mountains

Check out the fantastic clip from the Västerbotten County Administrative Board showing three blue, two white and three sand-coloured Arctic fox cubs playing together. Sand-coloured Arctic foxes are rare, so it’s even more exciting that they’ve been caught on film!

This year’s count shows that 25 litters have been born in the Västerbotten mountains, compared to 13 last year. A provisional total of 72 litters have been born in Sweden this year, compared to 40 last year. It’s also been a good year in Norway, with 58 litters, and in Finland, where the Arctic fox was completely extinct from 1996 to 2021, there have been 3 litters born this year.

The total population in Sweden, Norway and Finland is now estimated at around 560 adult Arctic foxes.

The survival of the Arctic fox is closely linked to the availability of lemmings and support initiatives involving additional food are therefore important for the conservation of the Arctic fox.
